And the Oscar for Most Disappointing Nominations goes to…

Another year and another set of disappointments. Yep, the Liberal Democrats have promised this year will be different from the last but we all know it’s the same shit every year. Speaking of the same shit every year, the Oscar nominations were announced yesterday. And while it could be the worst year for hosts since 2010, it could also be the worst year for Oscar nominations since 2011.

whohiredthesepeopleSo where do I start when everything is wrong?

BEST FILM:

  • Amour
  • Argo
  • Beasts of the Southern Wild
  • Django Unchained
  • Les Misérables
  • Life of Pi
  • Lincoln
  • Silver Linings Playbook
  • Zero Dark Thirty

Now this isn’t a bad list. There’s a lot of great films on this list. The problem is that it’s just a predictably bland list filled with book adaptions, biopics and films about current events. Where is The Master or Moonrise Kingdom or Seven Psychopaths? Why can’t the Academy nominate a great original film once in a while?

BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY:

  • Anna Karenina
  • Django Unchained
  • Life of Pi
  • Lincoln
  • Skyfall

Again no sign of The Master but I’m glad Roger Deakins got a nomination for Skyfall. I’m also surprised that Lincoln managed to get a nomination over something like Argo.

BEST DIRECTING:

  • Amour
  • Beasts of the Southern Wild
  • Life of Pi
  • Lincoln
  • Silver Linings Playbook

How on earth was Argo not nominated? Affleck’s influence is so apparent in the film and really makes the film stand out from your average thriller. Secondly, how was Paul Thomas Anderson not nominated when his three lead actors were all nominated? Who does the Academy believe directed these people? A chair?

BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM:

  • Amour
  • Kon-Tiki
  • No
  • A Royal Affair
  • War Witch

Now I don’t personally believe that this is a stupid list. The problem is that Amour is the only film on the list to be nominated for Best Film. Therefore one would assume that it has to win Best Foreign Language Film otherwise if a different film from this list won then why wasn’t it nominated for Best Film?

BEST MUSIC – Original Score:

  • Anna Karenina
  • Argo
  • Life of Pi
  • Lincoln
  • Skyfall

Jonny Greenwood’s score for The Master was without doubt the greatest achievement in music this year. The unique music manages to bring something out of the imagery that wasn’t there before. It perfects it. Have a listen for yourself down below:

I guess what I’m trying to say about the Oscars this year is that The Master was criminally overlooked this year. Screw the Academy Awards. Bring on the BAFTAs. At least they nominated The Master for Best Original Screenplay.

Matt.
